Briefly: OWC outs new SSD updater, Ableton Retro Synths gift

Other World Computing has released a Mac compatible firmware updater for SandForce Driven solid state drives. The new updater is available as a free download from the OWC website and is designed for exclusive use with select OWC Mercury SSD models manufactured after January 2010. To run the updater, users have to download software from OWC to make a bootable DVD. The DVD can then be used to launch a graphical interface that will guide the user through the process of installing the latest firmware revision to their SSD....

Scosche debuts RDTX-PRO radiation detector and app for iOS

Scosche Industries has introduced the RDTX-PRO, a hardware radiation detector and software app for iOS devices that detects gamma radiation and requires no calibration. The device can also be used as a standalone radiation alarm separate from the iOS device for up to 96 hours on one AA battery. In combination with the free accompanying radTEST app, it can detect gamma radiation above 60keV within five percent accuracy. Ten dollars of each sale will be donated to charities assisting Japanese earthquake/tsunami relief....

Apple Faces New Patent Lawsuits from Openwave, Wi-LAN

While much of the focus of patent lawsuits involving Apple has revolved around Samsung and other major smartphone manufacturers in recent weeks, Apple this week faces two new lawsuits from smaller companies seeking to assert their intellectual property claims.

On Wednesday, mobile Internet communications technology firm Openwave Systems announced that it had filed a lawsuit and International Trade Commission (ITC) complaint against Apple and Research in Motion, alleging violation of five different patents across a broad spectrum of applications.

The complaint, filed at the International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington, DC, requests that the ITC bar the import of smartphones and tablet computers that infringe Openwave patents, including, but not limited to, Apple?s iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch, iPad and iPad 2; and RIM?s Blackberry Curve 9330 and Blackberry PlayBook. Openwave also filed a similar complaint in federal district court in Delaware.

?Openwave invented technologies that became foundational to the mobile Internet. We believe that these large companies should pay us for the use of our technologies, particularly in light of the substantial revenue these companies have earned from devices that use our intellectual property,? said Ken Denman, Chief Executive Officer of Openwave. ?Before filing these complaints, we approached both of these companies numerous times in an attempt to negotiate a license of our technology with them and did not receive a substantive response.?

As noted by AllThingsD, Openwave appears to have a small yet fairly strong patent portfolio, suggesting that the company may have a decent chance of winning concessions from Apple and Research in Motion and forcing them into licensing discussions.

In other news, Canadian firm Wi-LAN today announced that it has filed suit against Apple and eight other major companies alleging infringement of two patents related to CDMA, HSPA, Wi-Fi, and LTE technologies.

Wi-LAN is generally regarded as a patent troll, having given up on product manufacturing and focused its business solely on attempts to license its intellectual property. The company has not been shy about filing lawsuits alleging infringement of its patents, and has in fact sued Apple several times in the past, most recently in a 2010 complaint targeting over two dozen companies for their implementations of Bluetooth communications technology.

Hulu Plus app adds HDMI output for iPad 2

Hulu has updated its Hulu Plus iOS app, and this update provides the return of a feature that some users will really appreciate: HDMI output to video is back. That means that the Hulu app will now once again output HDMI video to a TV or monitor that you connect it to, so you can watch the service through your iPad wherever you are. Good stuff. The removal of the feature was likely the result of content restriction deals or platform issues, but Hulu has apparently resolved those problems, so HDMI away.

The app itself is free, but of course requires a Hulu Plus subscription to access the content. Glad to see this feature is back in, so those with the right setup can use it.

Running winexe on the Mac

If you are a Unix admin and also have to maintain Windows servers, you will find winexe a must command line utility to have in your arsenal.

Until recently I have been able to do this only on Linux boxes. I have compiled it and it works great however, on Mac OS X I have not had any luck until a few days I came across this site. There are also links provided to the winexe binary packages here.

So, once you install it, the usage is simple:

Here is a quick exemple.

To get the route table on the Windows machine (using your correct IP address and other appropriate information):

winexe -U YOURDOMAIN/YourAccount%YourPassword //172.16.2.xxx 'route print'

If you want to start a Windows service:

winexe -U YOURDOMAIN/YourAccount%YourPassword //172.16.2.xxx 'net start "Service Name"'

Or to kill a Windows service:
